Bob Finnan's three points and rumor mill
Bob Finnan's weekly look at what's hot, what's not, what you didn't know and what you might not want to know about the NBA.
1. The Cavaliers haven't had much of an edge all season, largely because this is one of the worst defensive teams I've seen. Take Anderson Varejao and Daniel Gibson out of the
equation? Forget it.
2. Normally, a team does something extremely well. Golden State, for instance, can
shoot the ball. What do the Cavs do well? Give up 3pointers?
3. Is anyone expecting anything but a 05 West Coast trip for the Cavs?
Center Anderson Varejao's name has been floating around. The Cavs would have to be crazy to deal him. However, his value will probably never be higher than it is now. The only way it makes sense is to get a talented young big man in return.
Cavaliers forward Jamario Moon has pretty much fallen off the face of the Earth. He'll almost assuredly be included in a deal before the trade deadline.
Radio announcer Joe Tait, who had double bypass surgery and a valve replacement surgery on Friday, wants to return to the microphone sometime around the AllStar break. He doesn't just want to do home games, either. He wants to get back on the road and make his retirement tour.
The Cavs have decided to guarantee swingman Alonzo Gee's contract for the rest of the season. Is it the right move? Gee is athletic, defends and can rebound. However, he's extremely limited offensively and can't shoot. Continued. Nets forward/center Derrick Favors is the key piece in any proposed deal for Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony.
"Just because I'm starting now doesn't mean
they're not going to trade me," Favors said.
The biggest reason for the Magic's eightgame winning streak? Coach Stan Van Gundy has turned over the reins of the offense to Hedo Turkoglu. He responded with a tripledouble against Golden State last week.
Many in Yao Ming's native country of China think the 7foot6 center's career is in major jeopardy. That could be one reason the Rockets have tried to trade him. He had surgery last week on his ankle.
Even though it might make some sense, the Suns have no intention of trading 36yearold point guard Steve Nash. Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby has left the window cracked, but said Nash is the organization's "sun, moon and the stars."
There has been speculation Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison will make a bid to buy the New Orleans Hornets and move them to San Jose.
Spurs guard Tony Parker, who signed an extension with San Antonio, said he had no intention of leaving Texas.
"I always felt the Spurs are my family, and my first option was San Antonio," he said. "But if they didn't want to keep me, New York was definitely my first option."
Many are perplexed by Bucks guard Brandon Jennings' decision to compete in the dunk contest because he's been out since Dec.
